One of the interesting bits of trying to resume working on the game after so long is looking back at my ancient Draft Placeholder versions of an image from 4 yrs ago trying to remember what the hell I meant back then, to hopefully interpret it into some more final (ish..) form of the same thing .. making slow progress lol

Elster with a metaphor problem. (A metaphor for what? It is lost to me...)

I feel like I'm getting better with achieving what I have in mind when I start a drawing, and this is one of those so I don't really feel like there's much to say. Though this was definitely a more ambitious composition than what I'm used to I suppose. I can see technical improvement in a lot places but some things look wonky to me for reasons I am yet to understand (it's perspective stuff, ugh)

I love environments that are lit with sickly green fluorescence, and I’ve done something with a similar colour scheme in the past that I still love, and I wanted to explore that again. I could've left out the red in the foreground to emphasise that, but It's Signalis, I'm obligated to put ominous red light in somewhere. I also had the idea of overlaying a sketch of Elster at some point but the composition just wouldn't allow it, but it looks really good so I have included it.

I'm definitely finished with this, but I don't know how I feel about it yet. I can recognise that it turned out good technically but feel like I lost the sense of emotion at some point. I'm sure I'll find it later. I'm sure the me who started the sketch would be proud of how it turned out. I am going to now read some books and let it be and we shall see how I feel later.

Hey, do *you* have any idea why "superpowers are secretly distributed by a monster from space" seems to have been reinvented at least four times from 2007 to 2014? I've heard some hints that it might be rooted in Final Fantasy 7, Chrono Trigger, or even JJBA: Battle Tendency, but it's such an oddly specific thing.

I don't actually think it's oddly specific, I think it's a local minima for writers, which comes from a kind of can-kicking.

The problem with "random superpowers" is that it doesn't really make that much sense when you think about it at all, especially when those powers have a lot of very human-centric elements to them and aren't really grounded in any kind of understanding of the world.

So you're a writer, and you're thinking to yourself "well shit, none of this makes sense, it's all a little wonky from a setting perspective, why would powers work like this". And you can just bite the bullet and say "I don't know man, they just do", or you can think of some kind of handwave.

And I would submit that "aliens did it" has a lot of things going for it: these are inscrutable aliens with unknown motives and no morality, so we don't need to (and usually cannot) probe any further, they have the veneer of science and credibility that e.g. "a wizard did it" does not, and so these aliens can work however the settings needs them to work. They're an outcome pump, basically, and they're the closest convenient one. They're an excuse for weird, outside-context things to happen, and for readers to not probe any deeper. They seem legit enough, if you don't look too close. They can stand in for something pretty easily: pretty common for the aliens to be doing this for vague entertainment reasons, or colonialism, or this is some kind of pollutant effect or whatever, or superweapon testing. And again, specifically in the case of superpowers, there's a veneer of science on the whole thing, since aliens might exist, maybe. There's a lot of superhero stuff that has the same scientific veneer to it, so they match well together.

I guess I am, at heart, a believer in paths-of-least-resistance when it comes to writing, reinvention and convergence on solutions, and "aliens grant superpowers" seems to me like a solution to a problem that people would keep reinventing even if there were no prior works, and since there are prior works, you're also getting a lot of influence bleeding in, making the choice for "aliens grant superpowers" a lot easier. Audiences are familiar, they won't balk.

You find an "automatic" tank busted in the middle of the night, and as the good millitar Mechanic that you are, you fix it

Or, the Decepticons don't have a trained doctor(yet), and you just volunteered as a substitute by their leaders' logic and standards

You had to walk over 3 hours to get to your job, but fuck if it wasn't worth it, with a convenient lie here and there you could access the showers, earning a cold bath, but a bath nonetheless, you had to convince Rumble to stay in your bag but better that than the unconfortable chance of him asking why are you ashamed of being nude

The dreadful feeling of how the fuck were you meant to misdirect a parts shipment was momentarily ignored during the morning. You focused on your job, in some moments, when it was you and your colegues, you could pretend everything was normal again... then the second you were alone, Rumble would pop in and start talking smack of what he had heard from your previous conversation, sometimes he was paying more attention than you were at those

His perspective of the conversations are quite funny tho, wich balances the awareness of constant surveillance that he is to you

"I'm just saying, maybe she sould be less of a Glitch if she wants that promotion sooo bad" he says to you as you work on a new tank model, this one not being secretary alive thankfully... hopefully, please don't be alive

"It's been some hard months to her" you roll a big wheel to possition, ready to take the old one out "let her be a bit mean"

"You are just saying that because she is your superior" the caccette snicker "I saw your face contort when she called your work sloopy"

You huff, rolling the old wheel out of the way "shut up"

"See! Oh! Hey human, you busy?" You look at him, in caccette mode at the nearest table, while you were making heavy work of changing a tanks big old wheels

"Guess"

"We are going to have a visitor- HIM?! WHY HIM?!" You see the caccetticon jump angrily from side to side "ughhhh I should've let Frenzy come if this is who I'll be seeing today"

You freeze, gathering all your courage and walk very calmly, ever so casual, to the work table, pretending to be reading the spread street of the model you are working on, ever so aware of the cameras surrounding you now, and says "who's coming?"

"Skywarp, that overcooked turkey" Rumble murmurs annoyed

"He's... a jet or a tank?"

"Jet..."

"Tell him to park at hagar 11" you move your hands over the spread sheet "the cameras are wonky there since last years black-out, it's usualy free for us to take a break now, but every once in a while a pilot will park there and we'll have to move over for the maintainence team"

"Got it"

"I am serious, if he lands anywere else and I get caught or one of you guys do, I will be useless to your cause and you probably captured and studied under a, not so gentle, science team"

"Oh, don't worry about that, Skywarp would be fine... we, on the other hand... I could just blow this place up"

"For more of the technological advantage and size that you have, we humans are like cockrouches, hard to kill, harder to get rid off, you may escape but your existence would become publicly, from what I understand you guys don't want that"

"Fair... here, done, now stop complaining!"

"Thank you"

"Don't mention it..." but you see the little jump of surprise the caccette gave when you thanked him, an amused smile coming to your face "stop looking at me like that!"

"Fine,fine, how long untill our guest arrives?"

"Knowing him? One human hour, a little bit more, an arc"

"That fast?"

"Seekers" you can hear the roll of optics

"Got it" you go back to the tank and finish its maintenance quickly, heading out to hagar 11, and praying no-one is there for now

It was, in fact, not empty, but you had some time to kill, so you gave a warning to everyone and marked the room as "in use," putting cones around the outside area, no-one questioned you, there was no reason to, for now, tomorrow was another story

You hear the familiar turbins of jets and planes while waiting for your new patient, watching from afar as pilots jumped off and in their planes, the place was busy, paint work, maintenance, cargo, a little bit of everything happening today, not unusual

Then you see a black and purple jet approaching quickly, if it weren't for the unfamiliar color scheme, you would have confused him for a usual warmachine, unlike the other seeker you know, this one's turbins don't make a diferent sound

You wonder if it's intentional on his part or not

Picking the sinalizers, you start the procedure for his landing, keeping up the charade, he lands without issue, and enters inside the hangar "bit more to the left!"

You guide, carefully thinking a position where the cameras wouldn't capture you that well, mindful of his emblem in both wings, you had to hide those before someone barges in

"This place looks like trash" you hear the jet complain

"Quieter!" You scold him

"Don't tell me what to do human" you see the two blasters slide to your direction, a purple glow emanating from them "you are lucky our lord thinks you are useful"

"And you would disapoint him if you blew up this cover" you bluff, heart beating fast in face of the charging alien guns "so do as I say, and be quieter"

"..." the weapons cool off "fine"

"Oh wow, I thought you couldn't shut up!" Rumble snickers from your pocket

"Rumble?!" You hear the jet, this time his voice more quieter, someone could belive a pilot was inside him graced with a loud voice from birth, better than the booming from before "you are playing human-keeper now?HA!"

"Oh shove it up your aft Skywarp, would you?" The caccette jumps off your pocket and transforms, hands on hip joints "at least I am not the one having a check-up with the little doctor, what did you broke this time?"

"For your information I did nothing!"

"Go back to caccette mode" you shove the big lavender alien against a pile of boxes "someone could see you"

"This is merely a request from lord Megatron" the caccette shows his silver tongue, they have tongues, alright, fuck, what the hell, why wouldn't they "a test for the human"

You pick Rumble up and leave him on top of the boxes, rolling your eyes at Skywarp answer, you are starting to suspect that whatever test you should be having you already passed, and now the warlord was just using that as an easy way to convince the more stuborn mechs to come to you.... wich seems to be all of them

"Enough with the talk, let me in, I need to do my job" you pull the big metal ladder from it's resting place, tool box in hand

"Ew, you are getting inside of me?" You can see the plane scrunching in itself in disgust "with those gruby hands, fat chance"

You sigh loudly "I'll desynthesize you after, now stop being a baby"

"What's a baby?" Rumble asks from down bellow

"Tinny human that only cries, eat and poops"

"HA! THAT IS SKYWARP- wait what is poops?"

"SHUT UP!" You hear his blasters caring again

"Alright, fine, I won't get in!" You quickly pull the ladder off, ignoring Rumbles' question and paccing around the place "I'll still have to touch you for a check-up"

"As long as you are not inside my cockpit" you hear his guns power down again, great, a trigger happy bitch "I can deal with the rest"

"Deal"

Just like that you start your work, turbins functional, motor in very good condition, estabelizers well fixed in place, joints needing oil but that's nothing compared to what you had to do before

No energon leaks, his landing wheel, however, needed to be changed, you didn't knew if they expanded to a bigger part of his body or not, depending on where they were stored in his other form you couldn't replace them without breaking or denting him

"Your wheels" you stretch out, your joints begging for a break "do they expand when you transform?"

"What?"

You gently kick the landing gear "this part of you, have you noticed if it changed when in your Cybertronian form?"

"Not really..." he thinks

"Alright, this I'll have to check on the base later, because outside of your used up wheels you are good to go"

"That's it?" You hear the disbelief in the mechs voice "no need to open me up and check my circuits? How do you know I'm even sane!"

"You are a bit trigger happy for my tastes, but nothing too out of it from your leader, and I am not a therapist, kidnap another human for that, one that at least has the right degree this time, I didn't do robotics y'know"

"Are you calling lord Megatron crazy?!" You hear for the tenth time his weapons power up, now so used to it you don't cower anymore

"I am saying he has anger issues, and he will need to check that after whatever war is going on pass if he wishes to finally have peace with himself" you clean your hands "not that he is crazy, and neither are you, just traumatized in diferent ways, probably"

"..." again, the weapons cool down "you are weird..."

"I know, right?" Rumble says after a while only observing you work

You roll your eyes and say nothing, guiding your guest out of the hangar, without any more words, he takes off and you watch the black and purple jet grow ever small in the horizon, then he shines purple, and like a trick of the light, he glitches in the same place and suddenly... he is gone

You look at Rumble shocked "what did just happen?!"

"What? Never saw a jet teleport before?" He laughs

"HE CAN TELEPO- warp, of course, of course he can. Why wouldn't he be able to teleport, I should stop questioning things at this point"

You had fucked up, that's the only thought plagging your mind as you enter your superiors office, the comander ever stoic greets your with a nod and polite acknowledged "do you know why you are here?"

"No sir" you answer honestly, anxiety eating you alive "I was just informed to come talk to you"

"I see, good, it makes this easier" he takes a contract from his desk, and slides it to you "read it and sign on the doted lines, congratulations"

"Congratulations...?" You pick up the papers, the caccette in your pocket swirls in amusement as you gasp, a promotion "I-thank you very much, sir!"

Chief of maintenance and test operations, chief mechanic, a huge pay upgrade, how? You weren't the most competent one, nor the most proactive or suck up, how was this decided, your mind runs with questions as you walk slowly by the corridor, the time to go "home" finally came

And now, of all times too, you couldn't even commemorate properly without fake smiles, playing the part of a lucky and hard earned rewarded worker

"How...?" You murmur walking by the road side to the middle of the deserted area

"Sooo" you hear Rumble say "how did you like the gift?"

"..." You stop, picking the caccette from it's resting place in your backpack "you did this?"

"Eh... yes, while you were occupied, really your human communication conection isn't hard to break in" now that night falls the caccette transforms, and walks beside you "a context here, some names there, a mensage for one then to another and bam, mission accomplished just like lord Megatron desired"

"Why?"

"Something about an advantage to the cause by your missions success"

"..." Oh... it's so you can directly have access to the shipment and personally request the parts "makes sense"

The walk continues, and from a brief second, you think you say something parked up ahead, something shaped like your bike, but it was just your wishful thinking, it was only Thundercracker

"At this point I'll start calling you my designated driver" you wave at him, body tired from work and walk

The blue seeker hufs, no smile on sight, but no frown either "I am the only one open to the idea of it, just don't expect me at your back and call every time you need to go somewhere without previous warning"

He transforms, and you climb inside, Rumble jumping in and waiting for you in caccette mode on the pilot seat , he takes off after you secured yourself and your precious backpack

"So..." You start "how was your day?"

"Smooth" Rumble says, you roll your eyes

"Do you have a better topic than this for a four to three hours flight or do you want to stay quiet during it?" You grumble

"I may not be allowed to disclose details to humans" Thundercracker answers anyways

"I'm not asking for missions report, just, what did you do besides those y'know? Free time or something stupid you saw, those things"

You feel the jet hum rather than hear him "I see... Skywarp was acting strange today, he tried to transform while seeing his own feet several times, it was funny to see him tumble down"

"Please tell Reflector caugh those moments, Please!" Rumble begs

"Ask him yourself..."

"I can't belive he actualy tried to see his wheels change" you hold back a laugh "he could have just waited for me, is he always this impatient?"

"You have no ideia"

"Speaking of Skywarp... he can teleport is that... normal to you guys?"

"Ah... this explains why he went into recharge when he got back" the jet murmurs

"Yes and no" Rumble answers "these guys won't say if they were born with it or acquire it. Honestly, my best guess is that Starscream modified them in their recharge"

"If the comander wishes to keep this between ourselves, I won't divulgue the truth to anyone else"

"So you do have a special hability like that?" You fishiout

"An anoying one" Rumble grumbles "so loud"

"Not my fault that you don't run the second you hear me coming"

"How am I to run when you come already blasting that Primus-forsaken high pithched sound!"

"Like super sonic booms? Fascinating... you use it offten?"

"Those habilities offten costs too much energy to use, not effective for constant battle"

"I thought you wouldn't divulge any information for a human" Rumble teases

"It is nothing any other bot doesn't know already, only fair to share it with our medic"

"Thanks"

"You are too polite fleshie" "you are welcome"

Getting back on the Decepticon base, you imediatly went to the medical wing, asking Rumble and Thundercracker to pass a mensage to Skywarp that you wanted to see him, Rumble rolled his optics and passed the task soly to Thundercracker, who complied without fuss

Nothing was unusual, your things still clutered by the side on the ground, maybe you could convince one of them to move a metal box and make a better rest area, the exposed feeling that you had when sleeping was not helping you to actually rest at night

You hear the heavy sound of pads approaching and get ready to greet your patient

Skywarp didn't make too much of a fuss this time, transforming twice for you to analyze his form, luckly he didn't expand the wheels, wich means you could change them properly without risking deeper damage

"Good, pass by tomorrow in my work again, I'll be able to change your wheels, and you will have more control over your landing again, no problem"

"Tsk, my landing is perfect"

"But it could feel better, right?"

"... I guess"

"So you are good to go" you gently pat his pads

He sides steps you, like you were a angry dog ready to bite his ankles, somehow you scared him off, odd... better him scared than angry tho, and finaly Skywarp leaves

You can't rest yet however, as you can hear arguing getting closer and closer to you

"I already said I'm fine!" That was Thundercracker

"The deal was to pass in this mediocre doctor or so help me Primus you stuborn jet!" And this is a scratchy electronic voice

On cue, they enter, the blue seeker being forcefully dragged by the red one, Thundercracker is pushed forward into your direction and Starscream leans by the door, blocking the passage and observing the blue mechs actions

"Hey" you wave at your friendly seeker

He sighs "hello... this is a pointless check up"

"You will do as I say" the red seeker says nonchalantly "or you will have to recharge here, without a proper berth, and be too exhausted for tomorrows patrol, leaving our poor base vulnerable to Autobots attacks"

"You are... so anoying when doing your actual job"

"It suits me, doesn't it?" he teases, and Thundercracker transforms

As expected he was far better than before, apparently the last black spots were only from close calls and not direct hits, his leaking pipes were healing, much like Megatrons, but there was no necessity to change or apply more tape, the wholes were small, and almost fully consumed by the living metal, and perhaps these pipes weren't that much stretched and used by Thundecrackers alt-form, making the makeshift bandages you did still looking like new

During your inspection, you felt red optics following your every move and judgment in them, you are pretty sure Soundwave did the same when you worked on Ravage the day before, but you were too focused to notice because of the tension, or he just knows how to stare quietly

Due to that, however, you kept quiet during it all, too intimidated to make small talk

"Done" you announce, closing his cockpit "everything good around here, your wunds are healing nicely and no critical dents, you are good to go"

You jump off and he de-transforms, looking dead panned at his officer "happy now?"

"Hardly, is this what you call a report human?" He sneers at you "I could do better than that when I was still a novice"

You look annoyed at him, taking a deep breath, and pulling your best official posture "of course sir, my apologies, status report: the patient seems to be making considerate progress to be back at 100% health, his wunds are closing nicely and no proeminent malfunction has been detected in his exterior or interior hardware, permission not granted for software evaluation, no need for spare parts in the present moment, may he proceed away from harm his recovery is guarantee in perhaps 3 to 7 days, any questions?"

Both seekers stared at you, shocked by your speech, Starscream engines pick up, and his vents loudly protest, his wings flickering rapidly"no... dismissed"

"I told you, he got a millitar human"

"Shut it, back to patrol with you" they left as they entered, but this time, Thundercracker waved a goodbye at you, a mischievous smile in his face

Finally you dropped in your small pile made of a thin blanket and clothes you found in "lost and founds" today at your job, singing tiredly at the bright ceiling, this was your life now, better get used to it

ok actually fuck it i'm talking about this too. so, the ivantill kiss, right? there are a lot of beautiful stylistic choices that make that scene just incredible, but the one thing i'd like to zoom in on in particular for this post relates to the 180 degree rule specifically.

if you're not familiar with filmmaking, essentially-- the 180 degree rule sets up a line that the camera typically is not supposed to cross. the clearest example of this in the case of scenes where you have two characters in a room talking to one another. for the sake of smoother continuity, you generally want to stick to having dude A on the left and dude B on the right, otherwise it feels wonky or gets confusing to follow, both as an audience and as an editor. this is particularly true when you're doing some kind of shot/reverse shot conversation between two characters and need to ensure that it Feels like they're consistently looking at one another in the same direction, even if they aren't actually both visible in the same shot. basically, the 180 degree rule is meant to help keep your left & right from getting mixed up while filming, and to make sure that the physical space both on- and off-screen are clear to the audience.

in round 6, most of the shots we get of ivan & till while they're on the actual performing stage are close-ups, though we do get a couple of establishing shots. early on we have this very quick frame:

which is very quickly followed up by a close up of till's face, and then a medium close up also displaying his name in the background.

the majority of shots that take place in this setting (not flashbacks) stick to similar shot sizes, putting emphasis on till himself rather than the mostly empty background and stage.

ivan is presented very similarly. we begin with a shot of his feet as he walks up to the mic:

and then a couple extreme close ups of his face, both from the side and the front to emphasize his mouth and eyes as he begins singing.

i think it's this side view in particular that really helps set up the space in terms of how ivan is positioned to the left of till, especially since we also see till from the same side earlier. note the similarities:

we also often see them positioned like this in the flashbacks, ivan on the right and till on the left, a good example being when ivan licks the blood of his face like a fucking freak.

later on, we also get this fairly short establishing shot of the stage from the back, again setting up just how empty and vast this place is:

(this one is actually a bit odd since we're viewing them from the back. bit of a teaser, i guess? the importance of this will be made clear shortly.)

POINT IS. in the minutes leading up to the kiss, we have a very clear line established, wherein till is always on the left and ivan always on the right. a couple flashbacks may buck this trend, but this is consistent for all the shots that we see of them on the actual stage.

notably, though, we very rarely ever actually see them in the same frame in this setting-- again, only in flashbacks, or the extreme wide shown above do we actually see them together.

this changes as soon as ivan decides to start walking towards him:

but still, we haven't crossed the line. always, it's till on the left, ivan on the right

UNTIL.

BAM. it switches.

why? so glad you asked, i have a couple theories. it all comes down to two big points: making the scene more jarring + audience perspective.

in terms of the first point... till is clearly caught off guard by this move, so literally jumping the line right at the moment when their lips touch is a great way of showing how ivan has also just crossed a line, emotionally. it is also, again, somewhat off-putting and confusing. even if you don't fully consciously notice the switch, it takes a moment to reorient yourself within the scene and realize what's happening. it's a very subtle move, but it really emphasizes that OH SHIT moment in a fantastic way.

in terms of audience perspective... alien stage is a story about a bunch of 20 somethings (and one 30 year old) singing and then getting murdered on stage. it is performative to its core, not to mention incredibly voyeuristic. on a meta level, as human viewers, we are to some degree put into the same position as the in-universe aliens, watching and delighting and being horrified over the exact same performance as them. in the earlier shots for this video, when we see ivan and till from the front, we are watching the show from the seat of the audience (which is, notably, not especially present/visible in this round, in comparison to some of the previous ones).

by flipping around to the other side, we are also seeing the details of this moment from a much more intimate perspective. note how the light shines behind them in this moment, particularly in conjunction with this next frame:

ivan wants this to be a moment special to the two of them, not something done for the sake of adding to the performance. so he blocks off the spotlight, and angles their faces away from where (presumably) the majority of the audience is. he can only get so much privacy when they're right smack in the middle of this great big empty stage, but he takes what he can get.

this also helps him get a better look at the scores behind them:

and it's perhaps interesting to note that after this, we jump right back over the line-- specifically, right at the moment ivan is shot.

the fact that the choking itself is also prominently displayed with this orientation (till left, ivan right) seems like additional support for the idea that ivan was doing that for the Performance and the audience.

especially since, when he takes his hands away, they're right back in that ivan left/till right orientation, on the more intimate/genuine side of the line.

this all ends off with another interesting perspective switch, one that is so quick you almost don't even get the chance to notice it. as soon as ivan hits the floor, we move from the usual left-side looking in angle from before to one that puts till in the foreground.

a shift from a POV where ivan dominates, to one where till does, only after ivan passes away. this shit is rich, fellas.

Sirius threw himself on James’ bed and groaned. Not an altogether unusual occurrence, but James knew from the lack of words that this was serious.

“Don’t tell me you struck out with McKinnon again?” James said, not looking up from his magazine.

“McKinnon? Don’t be disgusting, Prongs!” Sirius scoffed. “I have no interest in Marlene.”

“Then what’s got you throwing yourself around like a 19th-century maiden on a fainting couch?”

Sirius frowned at him. “I am not— Shut up.”

“So what is it? Detention? Did you tear your leather jacket? Your fags got wet? You know you can do a drying charm, right?” James laughed.

“No, it’s none of that…” Sirius sighed, having no idea how to phrase this and somehow coming out with “I think Remus may have... taken a lover.”

James’ eyes almost popped out of his head, and then he threw his head back and laughed. Sirius covered his face with his hands as James roared for a good few minutes. “You are not beating the 19th-century lady accusations, mate. ‘Taken a lover.’!”

“Come on James, you know what I mean!” He grumbled. “Why else would he not comment on my earring?”

“Wait, you haven’t actually seen him sneaking off or walking in on him in flagrante delicto with some stuffy Ravenclaw? This is all because he hasn’t commented on your earring?” James’ shoulders started shaking again.

“It’s a moon!” Sirius snapped.

“I can see that.”

“I thought it might be a nice little discreet way of… I don’t even know.” Sirius slumped back onto the bed. “Am I being an idiot? Wait, you are absolutely not the person to give perspective on that. Do you think he’d ever… you know, after the thing with Snape? It really felt like something was building before that, and I know it’s been a year, but sometimes I get flashes of that glorious tension, and fuck me, I want him, Prongs!”

“Padfoot…” James was interrupting by the door to the dorm opening quietly. Remus looked at them both on James’ bed and raised an eyebrow, then he looked at Sirius for a moment, his eyes narrowing slightly.

“Do you have a new earring?” He crossed the room and Sirius’ heart started to pound in his chest. He nodded, and Remus reached out to brush his hair back so he could see it properly. The moon pendant dangled just below his earlobe, and goosebumps rose on Sirius’ arm as Remus’ thumb ghosted over it, and then his earlobe. “I like it. It suits you.” His face broke into a slightly wonky grin as he looked down at Sirius.

Sirius could feel the bed shaking slightly from James’ silent laughter, but couldn’t bring himself to look over his shoulder and glare at him. Not when Remus’ eyes were boring into his own like that.

“Thanks. It reminded me of you.” He said, uncharacteristically quietly.

The blush that rose up Remus’ neck was all the response he needed.

my biggest tip is pretty boring and has been said a billion times probably but you u fortunately need to do the boring basics. you can go anywhere you want from there and its gonna be much easier. ex. - drawing alot of boring 3d shapes in dofferent types of perspective. boom now you can draw backgrounds. drawing from models in realism  (live ones are better but photos are great too). boom now you have the skill and knowledge on how the human body works and can play around with it to develop ur own art style. greyscale form practice (like shading cubes or drapery or still life). boom u understand how light and shadow works. the hardest thing really (imo) is learning colour. me personally, traditional painting (acrylic, oil, guache, tempera) helped the most (again ALOT of still life). but learning colour theory, or just fucking around with whatever colour medium you like until it looks good is also very helpful. so again basics are really important.

next thing is, use resources. theres so many free  art resources out there and theyre very helpful. my personal fav lately are quickposes and david finch on youtube. use refs, if needed take ur own.

also mindset stuff like being okay with making "bad" drawings. shitty sketches, wierd colour xombinations, wonky perspective. making art is not abt not making mistakes, but abt making them and learning from them cuz if u dont try ull never get it right, even if its bad at first. also always go from overall to detail. make 5 minute sketches, that forces u to focus on form and translatinf the overall idea more than hyperfocusing on detail. and ofc alot of consistent practice. draw every day, whether its a 5 min aketch or something more polished. (im gonna attach some of my oractice sketches so u get the idea of what im talking abt cuz i feel like im not the best at explainin)

as for digital art, i was first drawing on a regular ass samsung tablet with a pen wrapped in tin foil (it makes it work like a stylus fun fact) on ibis paint which is free and honestly it was great. on thing is if ur starting digital get some free simple program cuz if u try to start with something thats "industry standard" its just making ur life harder cuz on top of learning how to draw oj a tablet, you have to learn the software, and u dont need that when u start. i got my actual drawing tablwt after like two years and i was working in krita (also free and really good). now i work in csp and its amazing but theres alot going on and it is pricey (but well  worth it imo) digital is easier in alot of ways but i still recommand learning traditionally

2024 Art Summary

A selection of art from the past year. You can find a little about each image below.

Happy New Year (Again!)

Just like last time, it's time for another self-indulgent end-of-year post. A lot of things happened and unfortunately I don't feel that I made as much art as I did last year. I got bombarded with people asking me for art trades when I opened them last winter and I still haven't done most of them. I'm used to only a few randos that I mostly turn down requesting them, but having a bunch of friends ask all at once was a bit unexpected. If you're still waiting, I haven't forgotten and will make it eventually. Unfortunately I have the "I shouldn't draw for myself until I do my owed art" mentality most of the time and it just results in doing absolutely nothing because, quite frankly, I often don't want to draw other characters more than I want to draw my own. I'm going to have to be extremely selective about art trades going forward. I also moved this year for the first time ever, and that threw a big wrench in the works. The reason I moved so soon was because my insane sister was moving back in. She threatened to poop in my brother's bed (she's 22) and threatened both of us with violence and my parents were like "yeah that's fine". So uh, yeah, goodbye to living that sweet, sweet, chimpanzee lifestyle. All of that aside, I still made plenty of things, and I'll talk about a few of them here.

January

Some of the last comic panels I worked on before the art trade fiasco put working on the comic to a halt for almost a whole year. These are sketches, but the whole page is done now, of course. This was probably the most time-consuming panel so far, as I had to draw an indoor scene with 9 characters (technically 10 if you count Scott twice). I'm not sure if any of the panels that I have yet to work on will surpass this one in amount of time needed. There's a reason I made this one of the first scenes on the laundry list.

February

The first art trade. I had the pleasure of drawing Mumbo, Jumbo, Balder, and Dash for Chalkrub. I don't feel too great about the background, with its wonky perspective and odd colors, but everyone seems to like how it turned out anyway. It's my third most popular piece of art on this whole site as of writing this.

March

I made this for no reason other than I wanted to draw something edgy for edgy's sake. It had been a while since I made any art of this nature, and Ferdinand is my go to OC for it. My taste in art is not the same as what I draw. I make what I do because it's more about the enjoyment of the process than the aesthetic appeal of the final piece. When I focus on personal aesthetic appeal, I end up not drawing for 9 months at a time because I hate injuring my hand on inking all the time. So if you're some edgy artist and ever wondered why the fuck a cartoon shitposter extraordinaire follows you, there you go.

April

Another art trade, this time for 888goober888 on DeviantArt. A perfect example of a classic case of the eternal false promise "yeah I'll just finish this detail and then be done." And then there's 3,000 brushstrokes worth of individual grass blades. Tee hee.

May

This was a painting I started, and then put down because it was awful to work on, and then I picked it back up weeks later and finished it. The miseries I suffer for not trusting the process. It was a backburner project for a backburner project, which is the website. This painting is now the homepage background, ready to greet all visitors to my nonsense.

June

Commission for Porcumoose. I get the standard array of OC types in my commissions, because every client wants something different from the last. This time I felt very fortunate to draw something I personally like, and I this was my favorite commission from the whole year. This is my way of saying to the public at large "Please pay me to draw more spooky shit please please please".

July

Art Fight month again. I was planning on attempting longest chain with a friend, but he fell ill and we cancelled that plan. I decided to do a slow art year instead, which means fewer attacks with higher quality. My personal favorite from fighting for Team Stardust was this attack, Osireon (a fanmade eeveelution) for Sqveel. Thank you to everyone who attacked me! I always appreciate every single one. Next year is the big 10 year, and I plan on making it special.

August

August always begins with a week-long break from art for me, simply to rest after Art Fight. I also had a week-long vacation shortly thereafter, so half of my month was already spoken for. I had also started the process of moving and lost even more time to that. I can't recall exactly what all I made during then because it was very little, but one of them was certainly catgirl Maudlin. Here she is in all her glory.

September

This is when I moved, and I did not have access to the internet on my computer for a little while. I also spent much of my available drawing time working on a commission, so this was another month where I made very little for myself and cannot recall what little there was. Scatterbrain pineapple is going to teach you French while I jog my memory with blunt force and drywall.

October

Alright, now we're talking. On a whim I decided to participate in Goretober, because I couldn't stop thinking of stupid slapstick ideas and I thought someone scrolling through the tag and seeing this stupid shit randomly in the mix was funny. I was correct. I have one last prompt that I'll get to when I get to it, but aside from that one, this was my favorite drawing from the season. I think I've raised the bar on my own cursed content.

November

After Goretober, I took a break from regular drawing and leaned in favor of website progress. I made a handful of long-needed art assets, animated a custom cursor, created directories for future comic releases, and more. There is still much more to do, but a lot of the necessary code is sorted out.

December

Fuck those art trades (respectfully). I'll do them when I do them. I started working on the comic again for the first time since last February and I've already got a few more pages done. I don't really publicly talk about the comic very much, and yet I'll have random people take interest in the characters, the site, the prospect of a comic coming into existence, etc. and so I should really get on that. As much as the trades have been delayed, this is a project that was started much earlier and honestly could've been done by now if I didn't have to live for so long with people who are blasé about abusing each other. It needs to be completed.

These are just a small selection of my artworks throughout the past year. If you would like to see more, then you can peruse the blog. It's been my goal to get the comic done for the last two years, and we're going on year 3 now. Same old, same old. You'll see more art from me soon. [uskglass-mirror-house]

hello! I'm finally back from my thesis hibernation (I'm not done with it, yet, but I no longer have pending deadlines yipee)! It has been a hot minute, but here is the finished piece for The Great Uskglassification. The inspiration was kindly suggested by @raindoor, and it was truly a challenge (which is great, because that was exactly what I was looking for). More thoughts below.

I was looking for inspiration and also some images to practice my perspective/ more challenging compositions and I had this idea to make variants of famous paintings but like with Uskglass and the Aureates with them. I asked for suggestions, @raindoor proposed two pieces by M C Escher. I decided to try to emulate Dream (Mantis Religiosa) and oh boy, it was hard. (Behold! The reference image!)

First off, I changed the dimension of the mantis and had to move the columns in the far back to account for this, which made the perspective a bit wonky; then, I went crazy trying to nail the details in the capitelli of the columns in the foreground. Also, my pencil sketch became messy real quick with all of those lines and shades (I think I filled it in too much; I should've focused on the lines only and coloured it in at the inking stage). Uskglass also did not look good, like at all, and when I finished drawing, I was so defeated (the mantis is the only element that I liked throughout, it always looked kinda neat); I was one moment away from trashing the drawing and starting again...but then I didn't!

Instead I just set it aside and focused on school because it be like that sometimes; I came back to this from time to time and did the lineart for the Uskglass and the Mantis reeeeally slowly. To my surprise, after doing the lineart and inking them, they looked much, much better than the pencil drawing (especially Uskglass' hands an tunic); this gave me the boost I needed to finish the inking. I ultimated finished this piece today and I have to say that while I would do many many things differently (using ink and brushes instead of markers, for one), I have come around to liking it quite a bit.

As far as the lore behind this, I had this idea that Uskglass attempted some sort of astral projection that left his body asleep in a room on the Kings' Roads while his spirit wandered around (in a similar fashion to the one he used when he left his Kingdoms for one year and then reappeared asleep in his castle). As for the Mantis, I have yet to decide whether it is a curious fae snooping around, one of Uskglass' allies guarding his sleeping body, or another kind of creature attracted by the magical energy emanating from Uskglass' body. Feel free to speculate about this lore to your heart's content!

I used watercolour pencils for the background and the floor tiles, but the latter looks a bit washed out in the picture, my bad. I really wanted to give the sky a magical air and make this chapel (?) seem even more liminal. I also have a previous version without the watercolour, let me know which one you prefer!

When I went on vacation I was inspired to try watercolor by the beautiful landscape of the Appalachian Mountains, so I went home and painted a video game.

Real talk, I will never rawdog a new medium again. I went background to foreground so it's cool to see some improvement that way. The perspective is kind of wonky so please ignore that a little chat.

Answering a SPNwin question on my main because don’t want to clutter up the side blog @spnwin-reader with any negativity. “Why was it cancelled?” There are better ppl than me that can speak to its cancellation.

But I think the show had support and decent viewings for a new show if i recall? The timing was just wonky with some of the network changes. I think it is most definitely better than a LOT of new shows out there, and it packs a lot into 13 episodes (maybe too much sometimes).

But I’d say that, for a monster show, the monster graphics were actually pretty terrible sometimes, especially the Akrida, and well. If you’re a monster show then, that’s gonna hurt when your main villain looks… that bad. (Sorry / not sorry.)

And while I think the Core Four design is excellent and memorable, and the themes mostly felt pretty good, it still suffers from having very telegraphing, and for-lack-of-better-word… explainey dialogue. (But well… When you take away the beautiful cinema in SPN early seasons, it’s like that too sometimes, almost comically so.)

But I still feel that, on second viewing, SPNwin does suffer overall from a bit too much “therapy talk,” to the point it can pull me out of the moment sometimes. (I noticed that the actors struggle to deliver those lines sometimes too… even very experienced actors like Tom, but overall they do great with the challenge.) Don’t get me wrong: I don’t mind when emotions-and-therapy talk feels like earned catharsis, but often in SPNwin it just comes off almost “Mia-Vallens-glib.”

THAT SAID.

Now that i’ve watched it again, I think SPNwin can feel preachy because the writers were incredibly desperate to spell out a lot of the OG Dean themes for the audience. (Which is why you get Dean’s perspectives culminating in the gift of his own hunter’s journal. We get his views on hunting and his views on love and love. Hell, we even get his views on the difficulty of having half-human monster sons!)

So yeah. They really, really wanted something of a “reader” for SPN proper and imho were especially clapping back at some of the misrepresentations of Dean. When you look at it that way, it feels immediately more comfortable to watch, like a game genie or a cheat sheet for Dean himself. (And agree or not, many viewers felt season 15 was an emotional “low” for Dean, and that the existential crisis was too hastily and shoddily “resolved.” To say nothing of his murder!)

omggg i just saw this :O!! i havent been around here so i didnt see :C but anyway!!! im not sure what advice or tips to give tbh so ill just share some things that helped me 🙇

knowing what im drawing (basically...using reference lol ) u might've seen this tip a lot but its true 😆 think of it as like... training wheels on a bike AHSAHSAHHA u use training wheels for some time until u can be good enough to ride a bike without them or something like that.... its the same with using reference. u have to know and get familiar with what an object looks like first before you're able to draw without it and with confidence. tbh i dont always do this bcos sometimes i just wanna mindlessly draw ykno 😔 and thats okay as well!!! just remember that reference is very helpful when u hit a dead end with ur artwork :D also learn from real life!! look around u! sometimes id stare at something and nod in understanding. ----------------------------------

draw what u love <33 honestly, i only got back into drawing when i went down the vtuber hole a few years ago LMAO i would draw vox akuma eveyday 🙂‍↕️ and then my love for one piece got revived so now i draw my favorite characters every chance i can get bcos its all i can think abt!!! its honestly a good motivator. ----------------------------------

accepting and learning from mistakes ive always struggled with perfectionism and that really took my enjoyment and love for creating🥹 and that also stopped me from experimenting and exploring coz id always think that it wont come out as i hoped it would. SOOOO for the past 2-3 years i think?? i make it a habit to STOP ✋ being super critical when i see or make a mistake. the perspective is wrong? noted. the anatomy looks wonky? okay!! i let them exist in my artworks bcos how would i even know where to improve in if i dont know what it is 😅 i also make sure to keep those errors in mind so i know what areas i should be working on. u can always correct them on ur next work!! and the next!! again and again!!! its never-ending! ure always improving, always learning. ---------------------------------

i also have a board of artworks and styles that i really really like and i look at them when i need inspiration hahaha sometimes u just have to scroll thru pinterest for hours and draw nothing lol

personally, i think one doesnt have to draw everyday to be good. i mean, you can if u want to! but u might burn out fast if u force urself to draw everyday. just.. pace yourself. remember to rest and be good to yourself as well :))

The Quarry and queer-baiting, part 2, AKA things I forgot to mention the first time and it was so much I might as well just make another part

On the topic of there being some underlying feelings between Abi and Emma, after they return from their little ride and Nick asks where they've been, Emma mischievously answers, "Wouldn't you like to know," which causes an annoyed Abi to inject "Ignore her, please!" Maybe it's just me, but I swore that was Emma alluding/joking about her and Abi having some kind of romantic getaway in the woods. And maybe Abi got annoyed because she said this in front of Nick, who she's crushing on, and didn't want him to think there was something going on between her and Emma already; little did she know her repressed feelings for Emma would come out in full later on in the game. Maybe I'm reaching as far as the eye can see with this one, but that was just my interpretation from the scene.

Back to the Laura/Max/Ryan/Dylan/Kaitlyn chain, I can actually make a bit of a comparison between how they treat the straight couple of Abi and Nick and how they treat the gay couple of Ryan and Dylan. A lot of people say that Ryan seems uninterested in Dylan (and everybody else), but people always point out the "Ryan seems interested" pop-up when Dylan is teasing about asking him out on a date. I mean, that should be game, set, and match for Rylan, but apparently not... I'd like to point out that when Abi and Nick kiss, the pop-up very directly says "Nick is falling for you." Not "he seems to be falling for" or anything like that, he very matter of factly IS falling for you. Whereas Ryan only "seems" interested. Again, it gives me queer-baiting vibes, as the game is very straightforward with explaining the state of the straight couple to you, but then it only gives you all these mixed signals and unclear crumbs for the gay couple. Not to mention, from my playthroughs and watchthroughs, it's much harder to get the "Ryan seems interested" pop-up than the "Nick is falling for you" pop-up as well. It's like they shove these things in your face on purpose yet make it extremely difficult to actually get at the same time.

Some people do like to argue that the "Ryan seems interested" pop-up is just from Dylan's perspective and probably not true, but that seems like a bit of a reach to me. I really don't think the pop-ups are supposed to be from the characters' perspectives, I think they're just supposed to give the player some insight and foreshadowing. For instance, "Travis will kill you." There's literally zero reason for Laura to assume and know that Travis will indeed kill her later, so it really doesn't make sense for that pop-up to be from her perspective. So I think that's a pretty weak defense for the Rylan antis. However, even if you get the "Ryan seems interested," pop-up, the firepit kiss, and every other positive thing about Ryan and Dylan's relationship, when talking to Laura later, Ryan can still always say his "maybe neither" line. So... you got me.

And yes, he doesn't always say the "maybe neither" line, but I also think that's a weak defense for the Lyan antis. I kind of doubt that Ryan only developed feelings for Laura during that very conversation itself. Even if he doesn't say that line/have that conversation, it doesn't mean he doesn't have feelings for her. Again, I don't think that conversation itself is what made him fall for her. Although, to be completely fair, it's not like they have very many positive experiences with each other prior to that moment, but Dylan and Kaitlyn insist on the sexy sparks, so... I don't know. I think the whole thing is rushed and Ryan really needed more time/positive moments with Laura before he started crushing, but I digress. The game's pacing can be extremely wonky at the times and I guess they worked with what they had...

Another defense people have for Ryan seeming uninterested in Dylan at times is that he's autistic. And while I 100% believe this and headcanon it myself, I don't believe this is ever stated directly in the game, so again, it's a bit of a weak defense. Please correct me if I'm wrong, though. Either way, it's obvious that Ryan is socially awkward and has a hard time communicating his thoughts and feelings with everyone. But people saying he's autistic and that's the reason he's unclear with Dylan as a fact is a bit weird to me because, as far as I know, it's not true/confirmed. But again, correct me if I'm wrong. Although, either way, it's not just his relationship with Dylan that's affected by this, it's his relationship with literally everyone. Dylan, Kaitlyn, Laura, Chris, Jacob, Emma, literally everyone he communicates with, and that is pretty clear. So it's not something that can just be applied to Dylan either way. This is more of a fanbase thing than an actual game thing, but I felt it worth pointing out because I see it a lot.

I believe I mentioned in my previous post about this that I feel the biggest Rylan scene, even more than their kiss because it was partially forced by Emma, is their conversation on their way to the radio hut, because for once Ryan seems 100% interested in Dylan and what he has to say. However, I believe this conversation wasn't included in the original version of the game, you could only get it from the pausing glitch. I could be mistaken, but I remember all those pause glitch videos from back when the game first came out and that they were considered these secret or removed dialogues and that Miles Robbins even alluded to it himself. So... there goes the biggest Rylan moment. The developers deliberately cut this moment out. It's literally like they fear actually pleasing the LGBTQ+ with the content they themselves created. I imagine they decided to add this scene back in the DLC due to the popularity of the ship, but still.

Another thing that's brought up constantly is the camera angles between the Ryan and Dylan kiss and the Ryan and Kaitlyn kiss. The straight couple, Ryka, gets a close-up zoom-in of their kiss. But the gay couple, Rylan, only gets the faraway shot. Seriously, what is the reason for this besides to annoy/disappoint the LGBTQ+ audience? Again, it's like they do this stuff on purpose. On a similar note, if you kiss Kaitlyn, you'll get the pop-up "Dylan seems a little disappointed." But if you kiss Dylan, it won't say anything about Kaitlyn. So this would seem to emphasize that Dylan might actually like Ryan a little more than Kaitlyn does. Or maybe he just takes rejection harder, who knows. But I thought it was something worth pointing out.

I'd also like to bring up the huge missed opportunity during Dylan and Kaitlyn's conversation on their way to the scrapyard. They joke that they finally found out Ryan's type, and that it's "pirates," because Laura is heroic and has an eyepatch. But literally two seconds ago, Kaitlyn is making a joke that they'll attach a hook to Dylan's hand and call him "Hooky McHook Face." You know... like a pirate?? I get that you wouldn't always get this opportunity given you can choose not to cut Dylan's hand off, but come on now. They make such a huge point out of it if you do, including in this very same conversation about the pirates, so why did they not add something here? Kaitlyn could literally just have one little line like, "Well then, maybe you do still have a chance after all," and Dylan could let out a small laugh or something. I mean, maybe they just didn't think of the idea. Maybe they thought it'd be insensitive for Kaitlyn to keep joking about it. I don't know. I just think it's a missed opportunity.

Another thing I theorized about is if the writers intended to pull the trope of "the rejected love interests wind up together" and pair Dylan and Kaitlyn up together; Ryan goes off with Laura and then Dylan and Kaitlyn are the duo now opposed to Dylan and Ryan. But, correct me if I'm wrong, the developers confirmed that Dylan is gay so... can't be that either. Regardless, I do know some people still ship them together. What is there ship name? Do they even have one? I'm calling it LynLan until further notice.

Lastly, as I said before, this post isn't intended to insult any ships, characters, or shippers mentioned. I just wanted to give the facts and also explain some of my personal opinions. At the end of the day, there's actually no endgame ships in The Quarry, which I guess is a good thing? Every shipper can enjoy whatever they want since we get no aftermath and they left it open anyway. It's totally okay to ship non-canon/non-confirmed ships, trust me, I've been there.

Someone randomly liked a couple of my vocaloid drawings from early 2022 and it for some reason made me contemplate redrawing one of those just to try to compare it...just a sketch though because I didn't want to redraw it that badly

I feel like some portion of my issues with stagnation are that at least lately I keep wanting to go in a direction that doesn't feel like it's what anyone actually wants from me, so I kind of get scared and split the difference between trying to draw better and trying to stay close to my old stuff... (I did that here too but that's partly because the first test i did of drawing the same pose again but without directly looking at the old drawing looked super wonky and in 2 different perspectives at once somehow. And the other part is just that i really cannot figure out how to stop drawing giant bobbleheads and it inconveniences me constantly.) I guess it just feels kind of stupid to still be insisting on loitering in the "how 2 draw anime google images" phase when it feels like the expected goal by a certain point is to stop wanting to do that at all. But I only want to draw stupid things...

Once again more yapping about this under the cut

While I did use a reference for this drawing, some of the office supplies and other things in the background I added on a whim. Since I really don't know how perspective works some of it might look wonky as a result but I think I did alright.

Now for the shelf in the back... It might just be my favourite part about this entire drawing because I just went into full on trolling-mode with it. Coming up with the book titles was so fun and I'm pretty damn proud of that Yoshi photo. Since Chiara loves her brother so much I wanted her to have a picture in her office (I kept it simple for my sanity btw, cause idk if he would be ever photographed this way lmao). I placed it on the shelf so it would be visible and I actually wanted her to have a second picture of him on her desk, facing her, but my perspective skills bit the dust on that one, so there's only one picture of him. As for the plant: I also don't know if Chiara would actually keep a houseplant but since it's the trolling shelf let's just say that Chief gave it her as a present if she doesn't keep plants 🫡

In general I'm satisfied with how the rendering turned out especially on Chiare herself but the lighting situation is not exactly how I wanted it, so I will need to improve on that part in the future.
